In October, we will be exploring color again.  If you recall, we studied color back in April where we learned a little about Purple, Pink, Blue and Red.  This month we will be exploring Orange, Yellow, Green and Black and White.

40/52 - ORANGE

Orange is warm, think sun, fire and flames.  It symbolizes health, energy, excitement and adventure. It is bold and consuming, active and cheerful.  It is also earthy and a color of Autumn.

41/52 - YELLOW

Yellow is a dominating color, full of vibrance.  It is energetic, light, playful and happy.  It can become overstimulating.

The above image with the taxis would have less energy if those cars and hat were black, for example.

42/52 - GREEN

Green is calming and fresh.  It is a color of kindness and compassion for our world (think "green" products).  Green symbolizes hope, renewal, caring and fertility.  It can take on a different negative meaning as well, like envy, jealousy and illness.

43/52 - BLACK AND WHITE

Black and white images tend to be more emotional in nature.  An image of a touching moment, converted to black and white, has us focus our attention on the emotion in the image without being distracted by the colors.  This doesn't just apply to portraits; the same holds true for nature images!  For a black and white conversion to work, the light in the image is really important, so pay less attention to color and more to the way the light moves around your subject.

In the image below, I saw the light peaking through the clouds onto the ocean.

While I love the warm color of the light and the hint of pink, I decided to convert the second image I took to black and white.

We are no longer focused on the color of the light and that pink.  We now see - and feel - the drama in the sky and the light shining down on the ocean and we know that there will be light after the storm clears.

Let's be creative!  You can incorporate the color's meanings into the images, or you can let the color speak for itself.

Please remember to post your images to the appropriate albums on Facebook no later than October 31, 2017.  The albums are located here: 40/52 Orange, 41/52 Yellow, 42/52 Green, 43/52 Black and White. I look forward to seeing your work.
